2017 . . . THAT’S A WRAP!
A LETTER FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Throughout 2017, WTF continued its traditions of developing and producing artistically vibrant and culturally resonant plays and musicals, incubating the next generation of great theatre artists, and connecting broad and diverse audiences with its work. This past summer, over just 55 days at the Festival, we produced more than 170 performances of 35 shows, readings, and special events as well as dozens of talkbacks, lawn talks, backstage tours, dinners, community events, panel discussions, workshops, and more!
Highlights of the season included The Model American, Jason Kim’s “bracingly imagined, refreshing and smart” (The New York Times) world premiere play which explored the contemporary immigrant experience in America and Where Storms Are Born, Harrison David Rivers’ world premiere play, which detailed, with “moving power and poignancy” (The Berkshire Eagle), one African-American family’s experience of grief and reconciliation. Sarah Ruhl’s The Clean House probed the messiness of love and relationships in an “extraordinary… compelling… timeless… and masterful” production with “a truly outstanding ensemble” (The Boston Globe), while Anna Ziegler’s Actually focused on issues of consent, race, and privilege on college campuses in a co-world premiere production that transferred to an Off-Broadway theatre this fall. All of these plays began their journeys to the stages of the Festival last fall or earlier through workshops, readings, and other developmental activities in Williamstown and New York City.
In addition to developing plays for production, the Festival is renowned for developing talent – actors, directors, playwrights, designers, and more – who go on to create work across the country and around the world. In 2017, members of our Professional Training Program, including our Non-Equity Acting Company, 70 Apprentices, and more than 100 assistants and interns, joined established artists onstage and behind the scenes. Guided by a seasonal staff of creative, technical, and administrative leaders, these early-career theatre practitioners worked together to help us produce a full season of theatre in only eight weeks – a phenomenal accomplishment by any measure. I hope you will take a moment to peruse “Roll Call” below and learn a little about what a few of our collaborators are up to now.
The current moment underlines the importance of theatre’s potential to unify audiences through shared experiences and exposure to new perspectives. Our generous patrons and donors allow WTF to reach the broadest possible audience by keeping ticket prices reasonable, offering low-income EBT ticketing options, and continuing free-admission programs. We are particularly proud of our new community immersive theatre initiative, COMMUNITY WORKS, which engages Northern Berkshire area community members year-round and culminates in a world premiere family-friendly production, presented free of charge on our Main Stage, featuring more than one hundred locals alongside Festival actors. The ability of theatre to impact and affect its viewers and participants serves a powerful and vital purpose: in making a piece of theatre within the community, we see one another, we learn from each other and in fact, we strengthen the bonds of and within our community.
Our work manifests in the summer but, truly, is an endeavor that continues all year long. Our success depends upon the involvement of many talented, devoted people during those months. We are grateful to all of our patrons and donors, whose support allows us to do our work with integrity and excellence, year-round, in order to bring you and our community a singular, wonderful summer of impactful theatre in the Berkshires. Thank you.
From everyone at WTF, I wish you and yours a happy holiday season and a healthy new year. See you in a few months for our 2018 season!
Mandy Greenfield
Artistic Director

2017 NEW PLAY COMMISSIONING PROGRAM
Established in 2015, the New Play Commissioning Program commissions and develops three to six projects annually from playwrights, composers, and other generative artists from across the career spectrum. Each commission also includes a writing residency at Williamstown Theatre Festival. The 2017 New Play Commission recipients are Big Dance Theater, Nathan Alan Davis, Meghan Kennedy, Justin Levine, Marsha Norman, Zoe Sarnak and Bess Wohl. The 2017 New Play Commissions are generously supported by Andrew Martin-Weber.
2017 L. ARNOLD WEISSBERGER NEW PLAY AWARD
Noura by Heather Raffo is the 2017 L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award recipient. Noura was read at WTF on July 21, 2017 as a part of the Fridays@3 reading series. Raffo will also receive the $10,000 Jay Harris Commission to write a new play.
Williamstown Theatre Festival administers the L. Arnold Weissberger Award on behalf of the Anna L. Weissberger Foundation. Named for the noted theatrical attorney and avid theatre supporter L. Arnold Weissberger, the award recognizes excellence in playwriting. The recipient of the award receives a $10,000 grant, and the winning script receives a reading produced by Williamstown Theatre Festival during the following season, as well as optional publication by Samuel French, Inc. The playwright whose work is honored also receives the Jay Harris Commission in the amount of $10,000 to write a new play. Each year, theatres, agents, and playwriting programs across the country are invited to nominate scripts. Finalists are then chosen by Festival artistic staff and read blindly by a select panel of industry judges.
2017 PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE
Michael R. Jackson joined us at the Festival as the 2017 Williamstown Theatre Festival Playwright-in-Residence. Jackson holds a BFA in playwriting from the NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Dramatic Writing Program and an MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from the Tisch School’s Musical Theatre Writing Program. As a songwriter, he has seen his work performed at Merkin Hall, The Barrington Stage Company, The Laurie Beechman Theater, The Triad, Ars Nova, Joe’s Pub, The Metropolitan Room, The Bruno Walter Library at Lincoln Center, and ACT in Seattle. He is currently at work on a new musical called A Strange Loop, for which he is writing book, music, and lyrics as well as writing book and lyrics for a musical adaptation of the 2006 indie film Teeth, with composer Anna K. Jacobs.
The Playwright-in-Residence is both an artist and a member of the artistic staff, who works and lives at the Festival for the duration of the summer. He or she contributes not only by writing new work that will be potentially seen on stages inside and outside of the Festival, but also by creating program dramaturgy for playbills and moderating lawn talks and post-show talkbacks.
