Throughout 2019, Williamstown Theatre Festival continued its traditions of developing and producing artistically vibrant and culturally resonant plays and musicals, incubating the next generation of great theatre artists, and connecting broad and diverse audiences with its work. This summer, over just 55 days of the Festival, we produced more than 177 performances of 38 shows, readings, and special events as well as dozens of lawn talks, talkbacks, backstage tours, dinners, community events, panel discussions, workshops, opening celebrations, and more!

The 2019 season included a “devastatingly of-the-present, absorbing, watershed revival” (The New York Times, Critic’s Pick) of Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, directed by Robert O’Hara; a “sumptuous revival” (The New York Times) of Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts, directed by Carey Perloff; Sylvia Khoury’s “delicately crafted play” (Berkshire Eagle) Selling Kabul, directed by Tyne Rafaeli; and Adam Bock’s “beautifully performed…knockout premiere” (The New York Times) of Before the Meeting, directed by Trip Cullman.

An unprecedented eight of Williamstown Theatre Festival’s recent premieres have or will receive second productions in New York City and beyond this season: The Sound Inside, The Rose Tattoo, and Grand Horizons on Broadway; Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow Moscow, Seared, Unknown Soldier and Selling Kabul off-Broadway; and Lempicka regionally. Developing and producing work that thrives beyond the Festival is integral to the health and vitality of both WTF and of the American theatre.

In addition to developing plays and musicals for production, the Festival is renowned for developing talent – actors, directors, playwrights, designers, and more – who go on to create work across the country and around the world. Guided by a seasonal staff of creative, technical, and administrative leaders, members of our Professional Training Program are engaged in the process of producing a full season of theatre in only eight weeks – a phenomenal accomplishment by any measure. Our work manifests in the summer, but it is an endeavor that continues all year long. Seven productions that were developed by and premiered at Williamstown Theatre Festival over the last five seasons, including 2019 world premieres Grand Horizons and Selling Kabul, make their New York City debuts in the 2019-2020 season.

The Sound Inside by Adam Rapp had its world premiere on the Nikos Stage at Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2018, directed by David Cromer and starring Tony® and Emmy® Award winner Mary-Louise Parker and Will Hochman. The Rose Tattoo by Tennessee Williams, directed by Trip Cullman and starring Academy Award® winner Marisa Tomei, was developed and produced on the Main Stage at Williamstown Theatre Festival in 2016. NEW PLAY AND MUSICAL COMMISSIONING PROGRAM

Established in 2015, the New Play and Musical Commissioning Program annually commissions and develops three to six projects from playwrights, composers, and other generative artists from across the career spectrum. Each commission also includes at least one writing residency at the Festival. The 2019 commission recipients were Salty Brine, Cody Owen Stine, Sylvia Khoury, Abby Rosebrock, and Jocelyn Bioh. The New Play and Musical Commissioning Program is made possible by generous support from James & Virginia Giddens, The Ted & Mary Jo Shen Charitable Gift Fund.

 

2019 L. ARNOLD WEISSBERGER NEW PLAY AWARD

Cinched/Strapped by Selina Fillinger is the 2019 L. Arnold Weissberger New Play Award recipient. Cinched/Strapped was read at Williamstown Theatre Festival on August 9, 2019, as part of the Fridays@3 reading series. Fillinger received the $10,000 Jay Harris Commission to write a new play.

Williamstown Theatre Festival administers the L. Arnold Weissberger Award on behalf of the Anna L. Weissberger Foundation. Named for the noted theatrical attorney and avid theatre supporter L. Arnold Weissberger, the award recognizes excellence in playwriting. The recipient of the award receives a $10,000 grant, and the winning script receives a reading produced by Williamstown Theatre Festival during the following season, as well as optional publication by Samuel French, Inc. The playwright whose work is honored also receives the Jay Harris Commission in the amount of $10,000 to write a new play. Each year, theatres, agents, and playwriting programs across the country are invited to nominate scripts.  Finalists are then chosen by Festival artistic staff and read blindly by a select panel of industry judges.

2019 PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE

Mona Pirnot joined us at the Festival as the 2019 Williamstown Theatre Festival Playwright-in-Residence. 

The Playwright-in-Residence is an artist and a member of the artistic staff who works and lives at the Festival for the duration of the summer. They contribute not only by writing new work that will be potentially seen on stages inside and outside of the Festival, but also by creating program dramaturgy for playbills and moderating lawn talks and post-show talkbacks.

READINGS AND RESIDENCIES

Four world premiere productions from the 2019 season received Edgerton Foundation New Play Awards: Selling Kabul by Sylvia Khoury, Grand Horizons by Bess Wohl, Tell Me I’m Not Crazy by Sharyn Rothstein, and Before the Meeting by Adam Bock. Selected by an independent panel, winning productions receive funding for extra time in the development and rehearsal process with the entire creative team, helping to extend the life of the show after its first run.

In July of 2015, Artistic Director Mandy Greenfield charged Associate Artistic Director Laura Savia and Obie Award-winning playwright Lucy Thurber with creating a multi-year initiative that would build meaningful relationships with our neighbors in the Berkshires. The resulting program, COMMUNITY WORKS, invites the people of Western Massachusetts to be a part of the Festival’s creative process – not just as audience members, but on stage! COMMUNITY WORKS brings together participants from diverse economic and social backgrounds and makes the Festival more accessible than ever. These diverse constituencies are connected with professional theatre artists and with each other through workshops, rehearsals, and a professional-caliber family-friendly production on the Main Stage at the Festival, presented free of charge for more than 2,000 locals.

Dylan Baker (Actor/Director, Fridays@3) is in a new series for Amazon with Al Pacino called “Hunters.”

Sera Bourgeau (Assistant Costume Designer) was the Associate Costume Designer on LAST DAYS OF SUMMER at George Street Playhouse, and is currently designing THE SOUND OF MUSIC at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.

Zack Canonico (Apprentice) is continuing his third year of training at Tisch Drama in the Atlantic Acting School. He is currently playing Dev in Atlantic’s production of STUPID FUCKING BIRD.

Tatyana-Marie Carlo (Matt Harris Directing Fellow) is directing FADE, by Tanya Saracho, at Trinity Rep.

Laura Chandler Robinson (Props Intern) returned to her hometown in Virginia and stepped into the role of Creative Director at a local haunted attraction, as well as participating in multiple properties’ contracts with local theaters.

Esther M. Cohen (Directing Intern) spent the fall assisting on shows at Second Stage and Yale Rep and working with Joey Mervis (Apprentice), to bring WTF’s 5×10 model (WTF’s directing track/program) to NYU Steinhardt.

Thomas Dieter (Stage Management Intern) was the PA on FOR COLORED GIRLS… at The Public Theater and just joined AEA. He was also the SM on several Broadway benefits, including those for NYCLU and The Actors Fund. 

Elanor Eberhardt (Journeyman Electrician) is pursuing a Masters of Science in Light and Lighting at University College London’s The Bartlett Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering in London, England.

Jess Elkins (Box Office Associate) is finishing her final year of college at the University of Mary Washington, performing on their main stage and working as the Audience Services Assistant at Klein Theatre.

Mark Feuerstein (Actor, TELL ME I’M NOT CRAZY) shot “The Baby Sitters’ Club” for Netflix and the new “Power” spin-off, “Ghost,” for Starz. He is currently writing his personal passion project for TBS called “Irrepressible,” much like himself.

Midori Francis (Actor, BEFORE THE MEETING) is starring as Lily in the new Netflix series, “Dash and Lily” to be released in November of 2020.

Kaitlyn Gonzalez (Apprentice) is producing the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television’s acting industry showcase.

Latiana “LT” Gourzong (Associate Technical Director) went directly to the Guthrie Theater as the Associate TD after summer ‘19. In January of 2020 she will be transitioning from that position to the TD at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, MA.

Rachel Gross (Assistant Stage Manager, GRAND HORIZONS) got married, was the PSM on SEARED at MCC, and is now the ASM on GRAND HORIZONS at Second Stage on Broadway.

Paul Haesemeyer (Costumes Technical Intern) interned at the Met Opera costume shop and interned with New Light Theater Project this past year. He will be designing Wabash College’s PUBLIC ENEMY this spring. 

Tia Harewood-Millington (Stage Management Intern) worked on MTC’s THE NEW ENGLANDERS by Jeff Augustin and is currently the ASM on The New Group’s production of ONE IN TWO by Donja R. Love (Boris Sagal Playwright, SOFT).

Dave Harris (Residency Artist) will premiere his play EXCEPTION TO THE RULE at Roundabout Underground in Spring 2020.

Paul HeeSang Miller (Actor, Fridays@3) is performing in SOFT POWER at The Public Theater.

Christine Heesun Hwang (Apprentice) will be joining the first national tour of the 2017 revival of MISS SAIGON as the Kim Alternate, starting this month.

Ash Heffernan (Apprentice) is an Acting Apprentice at Portland Playhouse. The apprenticeship includes classes, assisting in the functions of running a theatre company, and performing in their productions of THE WOLVES and A CHRISTMAS CAROL, as well as understudying in their production of PIPELINE.

Chris Herbie Holland (Actor, Non-Equity Company) just closed the West Coast Premiere of Suzan-Lori Parks’ WHITE NOISE at Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Analía Heredia (Apprentice) has been continuing her education at Molloy College where she will graduate with a BFA degree in Musical Theatre and a BA in Business Management in 2021.

Adrian Hernandez (Assistant Company Manager) works as a General Management Intern at The Public Theater.

Sylvia Khoury’s (Playwright, SELLING KABUL) play SELLING KABUL is coming to NYC in the Spring as part of Playwrights Horizons 2019-2020 season.

Michael R. Jackson (Residency Artist) premiered his musical A STRANGE LOOP with a critically-acclaimed sold-out run at Playwrights Horizons in association with Page 73.

Jasmine Johnson (Literary Assistant) started her first full-time, year-round job at Williamstown Theatre Festival.

Sullivan Jones (Actor, A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT) is acting in SLAVE PLAY at The Golden Theater on Broadway.

Anna Kalabina (Crafts Artisan) started a dream job at Eric Winterling thanks to her WTF connections.

Shahzad Khan (Stage Management Intern) is back at school and production managing three shows back to back to back!

Adina Kruskal (Cabaret Intern) has been music directing various shows, including the premiere of her musical, UNISON, in the 2019 Chicago Musical Theater Festival.

Jereme Kyle Lewis (Stage Manager, TELL ME I’M NOT CRAZY) will be the second ASM on the Broadway Revival of CAROLINE, OR CHANGE. He also was the ASM for THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM on Broadway this fall.

Zoe Lewis (Stage Management Intern) is currently the Company and General Management Intern at Portland Stage in Maine.

Katie Lindsay (Bill Foeller Directing Fellow, ORLANDO) began rehearsals for the world premiere of UNTITLED BABY PLAY, by Nina Braddock, at IAMA Theatre Company, and received a BOLD Ventures Grant for MEETCUTE, a short play program in Los Angeles.

Melanie Lisby (Stage Manager, GRAND HORIZONS) has been stage managing OUR DEAR DEAD DRUG LORD and is now moving on to the Broadway production of GRAND HORIZONS.

Priscilla Lopez (Actor, GRAND HORIZONS) is starting rehearsals for GRAND HORIZONS – moving from WTF to Second Stage on Broadway.

Donja R. Love (Sagal Playwright, SOFT) just opened his new play ONE IN TWO with The New Group.

Robert Emmet Lunney (Playwright, Fridays@3) finished his play, CANNON BEACH. He also appeared in Susan Ferrara’s BUZZ, Season 2 of the Emmy-winning “After Forever,” the finale of “Blacklist,” and played some golf.

Anna Martinsky (Apprentice) performed in Hofstra University’s production of LEGALLY BLONDE as Enid Hoopes, and is currently working on their Student Rep productions in the ensemble of SORRY, WRONG NUMBER.

Jason McDowell-Green (Boris Sagal Directing Fellow, SOFT) started his first production on Broadway as the Resident Director of THE INHERITANCE.

Paco Medina (Apprentice) is currently interning at the Houston Ballet in the Development Department.

S. Epatha Merkerson (Actor, A RAISIN IN THE SUN) can be seen as Hospital Administrator Sharon Goodwin on “Chicago Med” now in its 5th season. “One Chicago” airs Wednesday nights on NBC (8pm EST).

Jackson Miles (Marketing Intern) is in his final year of undergrad, acting in two of the season’s main stage musicals, auditioning for SETC, and continuing his employment as the Interactive Marketing Assistant at the University of Mary Washington!

Warner Miller (Actor, A RAISIN IN THE SUN) will be appearing this winter in the Broadway premiere of A SOLDIER’S PLAY, directed by Kenny Leon, starring Blair Underwood and David Alan Grier.

Claire Murphy (Stage Manager, COMMUNITY WORKS) is the production assistant and substitute stage manager for the WTF Broadway transfer of THE SOUND INSIDE.

Mira Nilsson Mitchell (Apprentice) has started studying at the Neighborhood Playhouse and is getting to know New York City on her own.

Deirdre O’Connell (Actor, BEFORE THE MEETING) will be performing in Lucas Hnath’s new play DANA H at the Vineyard Theater in New York in February and March.

Howard Overshown (Residency Artist) is working on the new Will Eno play, THE UNDERLYING CHRIS, directed by Kenny Leon, at Second Stage Theater.

Maulik Pancholy (Actor, GRAND HORIZONS) released his debut novel, The Best At It, in October, and he is currently in rehearsals to reprise the role of Tommy in the Broadway production of GRAND HORIZONS.

Susannah Perkins (Actor, Fridays@3) is appearing in Richard Jones’ production of JUDGMENT DAY at the Park Avenue Armory starting in December.

Carey Perloff (Director, GHOSTS) recently returned from staging Colm Toibin’s PALE SISTER in Dublin and then directed Seana McKenna as Shylock in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE in Calgary. Now she’s off to Arena Stage with A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS in January. 

Marissa Picciuto (Assistant Props Master) is finishing her BFA in Set Design, Scenic Art, and Props from CCM.

Mona Pirnot (Playwright-in-Residence) was awarded an EST/Sloan commission for her play, OFFSHORE CLINICAL TRIALS. A reading will be presented at EST’s 2020 First Light Festival.

Max Richards (Apprentice) is finishing up his senior year with a gender-neutral version of MACBETH in which he is playing the Lady herself, and will be moving to NYC next year!

Declan Rockett (Apprentice) is finishing his degree at Connecticut College, writing an honors thesis on cultural depictions of German history and performing in the college’s production of FUN HOME.

Thomas Sadoski (Actor, GRAND HORIZONS) is playing Mayor Buddy Gray in CBS’s “Tommy,” slated to air on February 6th, and he will direct the world premiere of Lucy Thurber’s (COMMUNITY WORKS) PERRY STREET this spring at MCC.

Matt Saldivar (Actor, A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT) will be in a new adaptation of DRACULA directed by Sarna Lapine at Classic Stage Company in January.

Sharone Sayegh (Actor, Fridays@3) is currently playing Bonnie in the national tour of COME FROM AWAY.

Alexis Scheer (Residency Artist) premiered her play OUR DEAR DEAD DRUG LORD, directed by Whitney White (Director, A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT). It is a NYT Critic’s Pick and extended its Off-Broadway run into 2020 at WP Theatre!

Benjamin Scheuer (Commissioned Artist) will have his second children’s book, Hundred Feet Tall, illustrated by his wife, Jemima Williams, published in February 2020 by Simon & Schuster Kids. It will be accompanied by his song of the same name, released by Atlantic Records.

Andre Segar (Lighting Design Intern) will be the Lighting Designer of a world premiere production of THE DANCE FLOOR, THE HOSPITAL ROOM, AND THE KITCHEN TABLE as well as the annual Lunar Gala Fashion show at Carnegie Mellon University.

Yue (Jenny) Shi (Stage Management Intern) just proudly closed her first mainstage ballet credit in the United States as an ASM with THE WIZARD OF OZ.

Marijke Silberman (Marketing Manager) now serves as Program & Communications Coordinator for Lab/Shul, an artist-driven, experimental community for Jewish sacred life and intentional social justice.

Eric Simon (Stage Management Intern) is currently finishing up his final year at Boston University as the Stage Manager for Stravinsky’s THE RAKE’S PROGRESS and Sondheim’s ANYONE CAN WHISTLE.

Owen Sullivan (Producing Intern) currently serves as a Line Producer on a senior theater project and was just brought on as an acting Company Manager for the Purchase College Performing Arts Center. 

Kevin Troy (Stage Management Intern) is finishing up his senior year at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, where he is studying stage management. This season he is the ASM on the university’s opera and the PSM on its production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC.

Dane Urban (Resident Assistant Stage Manager, A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT and GHOSTS) stage managed at the Clarence Brown Theatre in Tennessee, took a vacation to Florida to see family and is now back in NYC for his next adventure. 

Rebekah Vensel (Assistant Box Office Manager) just started a new position at the Kennedy Center as the Washington National Opera Prospect Development Assistant.

Nicole Villamil (Actor, TELL ME I’M NOT CRAZY) is working on a new play by Talene Monahon and will come to NY in January to perform HOW TO LOAD A MUSKET at the 59E59 Theatre.

Claire Warden (Fight/Intimacy Choreographer, A RAISIN IN THE SUN) took the discipline of Intimacy Direction to the top of the industry, as no less than 6 Broadway shows in as many months brought her on as Intimacy Director, garnering her a Drama Desk award for her work on SLAVE PLAY and the ‘One of 10 Broadway Players to Watch’ award by Variety Magazine.

Jeorge Bennett Watson (Actor, A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT) was the lead in Huntington Theater’s THE PURISTS, directed by Billy Porter, Hilary Johnson in Amina Henry’s THE JOHNSONS at JackArts in BK, and Pete in Hallmark Channel’s “Holiday For Heroes.”

Darron L. West (Sound Designer, BEFORE THE MEETING) is staying busy across the country trying to make theater sound better!

Whitney White (Director, A HUMAN BEING, OF A SORT) is working on THE AMEN CORNER by James Baldwin at Shakespeare Theatre DC and will come to NY in February to perform ALL IS BUT FANTASY, the next installation of her five-part series examining Shakespeare’s women and black female ambition, at Joe’s Pub.

Bernard White (Actor, GHOSTS) is starring in the Blumhouse Film “Evil Eye” for Amazon and plays Kal Penn’s dad on NBC’s “Sunnyside.” He also continues his second season as Scott Perara on Showtime’s “Kidding,” which premieres in February 2020.

Emma Whittum (Assistant House Manager) graduated from college in May and is now working many part-time jobs, one of which is being the Administrative Assistant for WTF in their Williamstown office. 

Bethany Windham (Shop Operations Supervisor) is finishing up her senior year at UNCSA as a Production Intern at Tait Towers! 

Susanna Wolk (Guest Artist, Professional Training Program) was the Tour Director for the North American tour of the musical WAITRESS.

Alexander Woodward (Festival Scene Design Consultant and Scenic Designer, TELL ME I’M NOT CRAZY) designed the WTF Broadway transfer of THE SOUND INSIDE.

David Zax (Playwright, Fridays@3) has been commissioned to write a screenplay adaptation of his play THE ROOM WHERE I WAS HELD, with Jeff Goldblum attached to produce. 

Anna Ziegler (Residency Artist) premiered her new play THE GREAT MOMENT at Seattle Rep, and PHOTOGRAPH 51 played to acclaim in Melbourne and Chicago, where it won a number of Jeff Awards.

Williamstown Theatre Festival is now accepting applications for our prestigious training programs and seasonal staff for the 2020 Festival. WTF’s Professional Training Program provides invaluable on-the-job learning opportunities for performers, directors, writers, designers, technicians, and administrators. Every season, more than 200 early-career actors, directors, designers, technicians, and administrators come to WTF for what is frequently the most challenging and rewarding summer of their lives.

A huge shout-out to the Williamstown Theatre Festival Guild!  The Festival Guild is a local volunteer organization that works to foster a closer relationship between members of the WTF company and the Williamstown community. Now with nearly 200 members, the Guild makes company meals, promotes the Festival in the community, and provides local knowledge and assistance to the artists, technicians, staff, and their families, creating fun, engaging, and memorable experiences for all.

The fun continues in 2020! Please join us on Monday, February 10, 2020 at TAO Downtown, for the Williamstown Theatre Festival Gala in New York City, as we celebrate the Festival and honor Trustees Bo & Katherine Peabody for their unwavering support of Williamstown Theatre Festival. 

Festivities will include cocktails, dinner, appearances by Festival artists, and special appearances by Laura Benanti, Joshua Boone, Kyle MacLachlan, Ashley Park, and more. All proceeds from the event will support the art, artists, and programs of Williamstown Theatre Festival.
